GCSE Maths Grade Predictor: Angles of Elevation

Pearson Edexcel (1MA1) Higher, Paper 3 (calculator), Question 14 from our predicted papers. Answer all three parts, show your working, then check your marks.

A and B are two points on horizontal ground in a straight line with the foot, F, of a vertical tower FT. AF = 45 m and BA = 30 m. The angle of elevation of the top of the tower, T, from A is 38°.

38° B A F T 30 m 45 m

Diagram not accurately drawn

(a) Work out the height of the tower. Give your answer correct to 3 significant figures. (2 marks)

(b) Work out the angle of elevation of T from B. Give your answer correct to 1 decimal place. (2 marks)

(c) Work out the distance AT. Give your answer correct to 3 significant figures. (2 marks)

Type working the way you would write it, for example 45 × tan 38 or tan⁻¹(…). You can use ×, ÷, ², √, sin, cos, tan and tan⁻¹ (or tan^-1).
